I am much more flexible and relaxed in both body and mind |
I’ve been practising yoga with Cheryl for just over a year now. Admittedly, it took a little courage to drag myself along to that first session: didn’t you have to be slim and lithe and flexible to practise yoga? I certainly didn’t fit any of those categories.
What I did have, despite regular exercise in the form of walking, running, cycling and tennis, were regular tension headaches, frequent backache and permanently stress-bearing shoulders, brought on no doubt by a sedentary occupation and long-distance commuting.
Off I went to that first class. Naturally, there was a lot of huffing, puffing and straining at first. But gradually the aches and tensions vanished - and even if they do threaten to reappear nowadays, I know exactly how to ease them away.
I now attend sessions with Cheryl at least twice a week, as well as attempting a little practice at home, and although I‘m still not slim and lithe - and never likely to be - I am much more flexible and relaxed in both body and mind. Overcoming those preconceptions about yoga and taking the first step just over a year ago was one of the most sensible and rewarding things I’ve ever done.

Classes are really friendly and attended by people of all ages and degrees of ability |
Having always been bottom of the class in gym at school I am amazed to find myself attending The Yoga Sanctuary twice a week in my early seventies. This is a remarkable testimony to the anyone-can-do-it aspect of yoga (when taught by real and kindly expert like Cheryl) as well as how good it makes you feel. Classes are really friendly and attended by people of all ages and degrees of ability - beginners included. There’s nothing at all competitive about them and no one ever feels a “twit”. What you do feel is so much fitter and better in every way - and SO glad you discovered yoga.

Nothing will stop me from getting my yoga fix now. |
If you’re wondering about starting or returning to yoga, but feel a little intimidated, this is the place to go. Cheryl will work her magic and adjust the level of difficulty to suit all needs and abilities. I started attending classes in my 40’s, having worked my way through the obligatory but much hated aerobics classes etc. offered in thumping, pumping, sweaty sports centres. Once I found yoga with Cheryl, I didn’t have to force myself out of the door in the search for ‘fitness’ – nothing much will stop me from getting my yoga fix now.
We’re not a po-faced bunch of goody goodies either – we come in all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds, but we are a friendly and supportive bunch.
Oh, and I no longer have chronic back pain at the end of each working day!...

I feel very fortunate to be taught by Cheryl |
Of all the yoga teachers I have known, Cheryl is without doubt the best. Each week her carefully constructed classes are different, one can never just switch onto autopilot, and her pupils are a delightful mix of different ages, sexes and abilities. She doesn't let anyone feel out of place. I have been going for about 11 to 12 years and now try to get to at least two classes a week - my body thanks me for it, as does my brain! I feel very fortunate to be taught by Cheryl.

I have now come to rely on [Cheryl's] classes to keep me mobile and free from pain |
I am in my sixties and as I suffer with a congenital back complaint, I have been doing yoga on and off since my early twenties to improve flexibility. Additionally when I was fifty I fell off my bike and broke my ankle and fibula aslo damaging my hip joint which has since been replaced. Cheryl has been my yoga teacher for the last three years and I have now come to rely on her classes to keep me mobile and free from pain. By employing her yogic breathing techniques I am also much better at managing sress levels. I always do one class a week and sometimes try to do two which is even better. Although I conintue to practice yoga at home during the holidays there is always a sharp deterioration and look forward to the new term.

As soon as you lie down on your mat at the beginning of the session you can feel the stress and tension melt away from your body |
I've been attending yoga classes with Cheryl for many years and yoga has become a fundamental part of my life. Cheryl's classes are very welcoming and relaxed and because you feel so supported and safe in her presence as soon as you lie down on your mat at the beginning of the session you can feel the stress and tension melt away from your body. She guides her students through the yoga postures very carefully so that we can achieve the best results from our practice. By focussing on each posture and movement during the class it helps clear the mind and bring one's attention into the present moment so that when it comes to the relaxation at the end of the class it is wonderful experience that peaceful feeling of being totally still and calm. I hold a lot of tension in my body and find that by practising yoga regualrly I can keep this under control. I have become more aware of my body and what I need to do to keep it healthy. Yoga has helped me to learn to relax and to be still. Life is full of ups and downs and when things have been difficult I have found Cheryl's classes to be such a support and have been surprised at how emotionally strong I can be.

"I felt safe and within the boundaries of my capabilities"
I am a novice and was a little bit apprehensive prior to joining the group this morning. I was so impressed by your professionalism and your calmness - you put me at ease, but I also felt safe and within the boundaries of my capabilities. I can honestly say that I walked out feeling taller and without most of the stiffness from the recently returned to gym. I look forward to experiencing my next visit.
